ABOUT FREEDOM SCHOOL

Started in 2013 at Asbury North UMC (Faith-based) Charter to improve early literacy rates for local underserved demographics in Central OH.  CDF(Children Defense Fund) Freedom Schools program works with young people to appreciate their own history and culture in order to overcome academic, social and emotional challenges.

What: Summer school enrichment program

When:  6 weeks from Mid-June to July

Provides: Nutritious Breakfast, Lunch & Snacks

Program hours: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Who: Nurtures up to 50 elementary children (K- 5 grade)

Freedom School's Goals

Literacy: Our Scholars all read on average over 12 books
throughout the course of the summer
Nutrition: We provided hot breakfast, lunch, and morning
snack to all of our scholars daily.

Social Justice: Our Servant Interns and Scholars put
together an on campus protest against gun violence for
our Annual National Day of Social Action.
Off Site Learning: We took our scholars to 4 field trips
throughout the summer including COSI, Franklin Park
Conservatory, and the Columbus Zoo!
